hey,
my personal reason for happily shelling out the extra cash for a mac;

i spend most of my life in front of my computer, at work, at home, and on the train in-between. at work i admin macs and pc's and i have a linux (mandrake9) system at home for 'fun'!

the mac works. i have no problems with virii. i have a standardised interface between all my applications. i don't have to compile software from source and or worry about package and library dependancies. i have a beautiful gui with which i personally find very intuitive and highly productive. i also have one of the most beautiful laptop computers in production. i enjoy using an OS which is moving forward.

all in all, i want to be able to use my computer all the time and not spend all my time making it work so that rules out linux (from my experience), plus i believe that linux is only free if you don't value your own time, or already know enough tech to make it happen.

i could use windows but, i enjoy using a system with personality, i enjoy not using the same system as everyone else.

i get excited about each osx release because the os is moving forward so fast, each new release brings significant new features, both structural and on the surface.

i appreciate using what i find to be a well designed set of tools.

(by the way, if you plug a two button wheel mouse into a mac those wheels and buttons will all function)

I'm not a big Mac fanatic - in fact I hated them until OS X came along. I still don't have one and besides, I want at least two buttons and a wheel on my mice. But... the problem with Linux on the desktop is that so many of the applications seem to be "projects". Also in many areas, it seems that Linux is still trying to get to where Windows (and therefore MacOS) already are today. Obviously there are exceptions but if you want Unix on the desktop, an end-user proof OS then I think MacOS X is the way to go rather than Linux. If you're happy to tinker and know your way around then Linux is fine.

I'm with you on this. I've used many macs since the days of the 5 1/4" disks, and output to a tape recorder. However I'm not willing to pay good money to be locked into their hardware.

Well... put it this way, if someone gave me a Mac, I wouldn't give it back. Yes, I do like it for what it is. I just don't get why Mac heads drool so much over a machine.
