The Home Computer of 2004
Caption below the image reads:
Scientists from the RAND Corporation have created this model to illustrate how a “home computer” could look like in year 2004. However the needed technology will not be economically feasible for the average home. Also the scientists readily admit that the computer will require not yet invented technology to actually work, but 50 years from now scientific progress is expected to solve these problems. With teletype interface and the Fortran language, the computer will be easy to use and only [truncated]
Could you imagine what they would have predicted a “portable” computer would look like?
Update: Turns out this is a hoax. I got this from del.icio.us/popular — the original image came from here… from some guy named Scott

Home Computer 2004 - Not!
From Manalang via Scobleizer have a look at what they thought a Home PC would look like in 1954. If my blog about the pace of change is right, our predictions for the next 10 years are going to be…

Classic: Home Computers of 2004
Aparently, this is what computers of 2004 were supposed to look like. Wonder what happened?…

What Spider said. Looks like something the Onion put together. Even in 1954 they probably wouldn’t think of a computer with analog readouts, a steering wheel, and a 60/70’s era DECWriter!

hey i want a steering wheel on my pc :’( that guy must have designed the l33t gaming rig of 2004. with all those readouts he must have been a flight sim legend
September 20th, 2004 at 10:55 AM PDT
Actually, it’s not a steering wheel, it’s a pair of throttle control wheels from a marine steam turbine engine!

A comment at Scobleizer recognized the control panel of a 688 submarine, I found the photo here. Roy Green is right about the DECWriter. I found the photo of that here.

I wish my Mac had a big wheel like that.
If it did, I wouldn’t look quite so weird when I’m sitting at my desk and shout “Hard astern! Hard astern full!”
